Even when you are out for a business dinner or
special occasion, you can still take
control of what you eat and therefore
stay on track with your fitness and weight goals. The beauty of most restaurants these days is that they are very used to people asking for things to be cooked a
certain way and for clients to modify the menu to suit their needs. Here are my top
ordering questions/ statements….
1. “Dressing on the side please”. This allows you to control the amount used and substitute a poor quality, high fat dressing for extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar
2. “No cheese please”. This trims the saturated fat and vastly reduces the total calories consumed
3. “How is that cooked?” Find out and if the cooking involves butter and deep frying you know you need to modify it
4. “How large is the protein portion?” Ask for the cooked weight. Most of the time you will get plenty but sometimes the chicken salad you order is too light on the chicken to meet your protein needs
5. “Baked potato with trimmings on the side and no butter”. Again, limits your exposure to high fat and high calorie intake
6. Always ask if they can steam the vegetables, grill the meat/ fish and substitute the fries/ sautéed potatoes for rice or baked potato
7. Ask for a “to-go box” to come with your meal, this allows you to control your portion size BEFORE you start eating.
8. Ask them to not bring you bread or chips while you wait for your meal if you are on a weight loss plan
9. Have a salad as your appetizer. This guarantees that you at least get your greens for the day.
